Hi my name is Sandra and the choreography that we're gonna be working on today is a classic belly dance intro to fada by Hostin Ramsey the original song is over 9 minutes long this is an edited version that works out to about five minutes it's ideal for night clubs and parties and it has a wonderful melodic line but both Middle Eastern and non Middle Eastern audiences can really appreciate.

After short veil entrants we move on to some taksim sections a shimmy section dominated by commune instrumentation a little bit of society with saya tea rhythm and instrumentation and then a dynamic finale.

We'll begin with a short veil entrance I like to keep my veil work as simple as possible and if you find that you have extra time or a little extra concentration I improvise variations on it but my basic choreography is always very simple so starting with a chasse to enter we'll start right left right left right left turn two three flourish left.

Right left right left right turn two three with a full / toss let's walk slowly through it starting with the shop stay on the right foot right left right left right left here's where I prep for my turn to the right right and sweep sweep a little flourish with the veil you can come up and under up and under or feel free to go down and up down and up whichever you find more comfortable notice how my head slightly echos the path of the veil got it up and lift the chin left right left right left right turn with a full / toss around one.

Front let's do that a little bit more slowly the first accent is right left up make. Sure that your shoulders are down as your chest is lifted make sure in this position this lifting chest doesn't encourage you to arch your lower back keep your tail tucked we're gonna sweep. This next sections instrumentals is dominated by a kanoon and we're going to put a little shimmy section on top of this so we'll have shoulder shimmies we'll have hip shimmies and a little combination underneath it all so remember we were coming from here we came over to here to here and we're crossing with the right foot in a little pivot turn the hands come down you're going to press all the way down to the hips it goes one two three four five six seven eight one two three four five six. Seven eight one we're gonna lift the right hip one more time we start with the shoulder shimmies they're coming from this pivot turn hence come all the way down to the hips so that they can scoop into the shoulder shimmies land in the heels on the accent and that presses the shimmy into the feet one two three four five six seven eight one two three four five six seven eight one two three. Four five six seven eight one two three. Four five six seven eight one let's.

Review we're scooping from the hips one two three four five heels hips two three.

Peels hips two three four cross and lift.

The shimmy and you can come around to the front either direction let's try it with the music.

This next section is a repeat of the previous tax team section where previously we did small hip circles this time we're going to catch the accents with undulations so you can take it slow or walk through it very slowly and I'm gonna add a variation for people who have a little bit stronger legs and are ready if you can go all the way to the ground we're gonna end in this position so let me just explain this first it's almost like you just crouched low and when you come up you're gonna lift up here with the hips coming up first so don't try and hold your lower back and come all the way down into it you can release the lower back and land in the seated heel and push back up out of it so it's considerably easier than a very technical undulation to the floor because you don't have to hold the shape of your upper body so just to review that technique it will be undulation undulation and press back up the arms go roll sweep okay so I'll go over that a.

Little bit slowly when we walk through it the count is one two three and four.

Five and six seven eight we're gonna.

Turn to the right you should have all your weight on your left foot turning right one two three four five and six.

You're in a releve here and you're gonna pivot turn with the right foot across seven eight as you release the right hand let's go over the right side one more time and then we'll do right and left they're the same so we're gonna step forward two steps four four counts one two three and four five and six.

Seven eight use those two counts just to get up as slowly as you need to we're gonna turn to the right this is your prep for your turn one two three four.

Five and six release the right arm as.

You pivot the right foot across seven eight let's do the same thing on the left side stepping forward with the left foot one two three this time the undulations are on the right and four five and six.

Seven eight this time we're turning to the left one two three four.

Sweep five drop drop roll through and.

Arms coming all the way down the body scoop long on the leg try to keep your chest lifted fold yourself in half pull your lower abs in reach one two three.

Undulations on the left and four five and six seven eight we're going to turn.

Now it's your choice if you want to turn that if you have good balance and you want to turn this into a little barrel turn you can my balance sometimes can be a little unreliable the way you're going to do that is you're going to arch your upper body and you're going to keep your head and you focus on the front as much as you can the music is only medium pace so it never goes quite fast but we're just going to go a little bit up to tempo 6 7 8 1 2 3 & 4 5 & 6 7 8 1 2 3 4 5 & 6 7 8.

This next section is a bit of Sayyidi you can hear the Sayyidi rhythm underlying the instrumentation and the instrumentation becomes very North African you can hear the NIE and the typical Sayyidi instruments so try and keep it light keep bouncy it's directly in contrast with the previous Taksim which is very slinky and you want the two dynamics to really juxtapose against each other and be as opposite as they can possibly be so we're going to transition out of our relevé drop drop we're gonna drop the left arm as the left foot steps across and we're gonna scoop down the right arm this comes right into the Sayyidi hip drop we're gonna have it go down up down down up down up down down up five six.

Seven eight four counts of Egyptian walk straight forward one two three four five. Hop push push we have half turns going.

To over the right foot step to the front step to the back step to the front turn around the left foot let's count that section again from. Our hip drops six seven and one two. Three four five six seven eight one two.

Three four five hop push push one two.

Three four five six seven eight feet.

Together we're gonna come into a shoulder shimmy one two three four five six seven eight one chest to chest three.

Chest four chest you can make this either a little undulation coming from the hips or a pop whatever you feel comfortable with if you'd like to keep your shimmy going maybe you'd like to just keep it a pop or keep the shimmy going and keeping an undulation your choice from the beginning 6 7 8 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 1 2 3 4.

5 6 push push step to the front to the back to the front turn and 1 2 3 heels 1 2 3 pop one pop to pop 3 pop 4 pop.

We're going to go to hip drops on the right foot 1 2 3 4 it's a sit and the top arm comes down 5 6 7 8 we're gonna do shoulder shimmies little Sayyidi shoulder shimmies nice and light 1 2 3 4 all the way down 5 6 7 8.

Same thing on the left 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8.

With the second half of that Sayyidi section from the hip drops we're gonna drop 1 2 3 v 2 2 3.

Sit when you sit I'm pulling the lower abs in I'm bending through the knee and I lift my chest and my chin just slightly as my hips go down and the hand comes down so you don't want everything to go down you want some things to lift up as the whole body comes down so we're going to go 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8.

These Sayyidi shoulders it's a lean from the ribcage so you're gonna do this and this and your shoulders stay level but your entire ribcage leans to the side your head comes along with it so don't let it be like this where you try to keep your head centered but your chest is moving leaning side-to-side your head comes with it it's the whole upper body like you're a doll and you're posing you side to side and along with that is your shoulder shimmies one two three four five six seven eight four two go down four to come up take your time as you go down and get into a position that you know is comfortable for you that you're gonna be able to come up from if you don't want to go all the way down to the floor halfway down and up is a nice level change from here six seven from the drop one two three chin up five six seven chin up right left right left right left right left side one two. Three sit one two three sit left right left right five six seven.

Eight let's walk through the whole thing with a count six seven from the sweep. Six seven eight one two three four five.

This next section is the transition between the TOC seams and the shimmies with the kanoon and the sayyidi section and the exit part it's the climax of the entire choreography and the music so it starts getting a little bit faster and we have some accents we have five accents and the count is one and two and three release release six seven eight so. We're gonna do some twists big twist one and two and three to a lower a block four five six seven and relax one and.

Two and three four five six seven to the.

Back one and two and three four five six.

Seven one more time one and two and three four five six seven opening to the.

Front on eight we have four sets of those the first two are twists with a lower a block I'll count through it one more time six seven and one and two and. Three that's my right hip going back on one one and two and pull and snake arms.

Snake arms I bend my knees slowly and left side prep the hip forward to hit back front back front pull four five six.

Seven facing the back I'm gonna step open with my left foot right left right left sit on the right and I have a small hip circle as I look forward in this position I like to keep my elbow up off my chest instead of letting it come down it keeps the view of your torso clear and makes your hip line look longer as you come around that hip circle starting on the right one and two and three four I'm gonna step forward on the left foot and I'm gonna push forward into a large ship circle the side pull your lower abs in reach the chest forward and come forward we're going to come into we're gonna open the left leg and come into a very slow lean on the right side I'm gonna engage my right glute and I'm gonna lean back using my oblique as my support instead of my back so it's not a backbend it's a lean over to the side release the head and coming up into the.

Hip circle and face the front let's go. Through that one more time six seven from the twist right left right left pull six seven and eight and.

One and two and three four five six.

Seven and right left right left drop. Four five six seven and left right left.

Right drop four five six seven and all.

I'm gonna do is reposition this foot to the side one two three four and there's. Actually no count for this so just take as much time as you want to coming around and the arms will sweep down to frame the hips for the transition into the ending let's try with music.

This sex ending section repeats twice and it starts with a three-quarter shimmy I have my three quarter shimmy on the down but you're free to keep it with the downbeat on the down or on the up whatever you feel comfortable with we're gonna start with eight counts of a three quarter shimmy from the hips up to a neutral position and we're going to start one two three four five six seven. Eight we're gonna start with a chasse on the right foot right left right left right left turn right one two sweep sweep one.

Hand on the hip one arm out right left right left right left turn - you're.

Gonna bring the arm back and over and I'm gonna pull back dragging the left foot behind I'm gonna reach back with the right arm back with the right leg and pull as I come around the trick to this is keeping your shoulders down and back pulling with your arms but not pulling with your upper body so your shoulders stay down your chest stays lifted even as everything from the hands and arms is dragging forward along the left diagonal.

Right left right left right left turn to. Pull the entire chaussée section right.

Left right left right left turn - sweep. Sweep right left right left right left turn - dragging back I'm going to take small steps back but if you're on a big stage cover a lot of ground one two three four turn right on five five six. Seven eight and then a chasse forward one two three four turn right six you're going to bring your hands to your back pockets as you step back on the right foot and pull with the left.

Let's go through that whole section again to explain it we have sha seis to the right diagonal chef stays to the left diagonal walking straight back and then sha say is forward the map that you should see on the floor is a Y right then left straight back straight forward let's try that pattern chasse is on the right foot right left right left right left turn five six seven eight right.

From the chef's ease forward we have snake arms on the horizontal plane as we have our soft stays right and left turn right one two three four the arms sweep. One two plant the foot pivot one two.

Step arabesque everyone's arabesque is different and it's your choice whether you want to come up in a releve or whether you want to be in a plie and stay low or whether you'd like to straighten your leg it's entirely up to you the most important part is this line of the legs out and the arm that's out from this position we cross open back push back and then we're.

Going to turn to the left five six seven eight with a little twist we're gonna do the same thing on the left side but let's go through it a few more times on the right and then we'll work on it on the left from the chasse forward one two three four turn to.

For the finale of the song we have some fast turns and a nice pose so let's get started we're gonna come from our 3/4 shimmies of eight counts one two three four five six seven prep on eight I'm.

Gonna turn to the right and I'm gonna sweep with my left arm that's the arm that's behind me I call it my trailing arm and this is a little arm arabesque so it's my trailing arm arabesque one two three four five six seven is a lower.

Out lock your preps to turn left from this position one two three four five.

Six seven to the lower ab lock all your weight should be on your left foot you're going to step forward on the right and you're gonna go one two three four five six seven eight and this is.

Releve lower abs and sit one two three.

Four five six seven eight one turn to.

The left one two three four five six. Seven eight one and that's the end let's.

Walk through that again from the three quarter shimmy one two three four five six seven prep.

Turn right two three four five six seven.

You have three counts to get around on the turn and you're supposed to be holding still for four it should go one two three four five six seven and right.

As with any choreography what works in this studio may not work for a live audience for the live performance I've modified some sections of the choreography and a little bit of it is improvisation as well please feel free to play with what feels comfortable for you and change the sections that you need to
